New Delhi: The Ministry of Railways has approved the construction of a 4th line between Pakur and Gumani (18.48 km) at an estimated cost of ₹343.98 crore. The project is proposed under the umbrella work for multi-tracking/flyover/bypass lines for capacity augmentation during 2024-25 and is going to significantly benefit the major thermal power plants, the Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant and Ghatampur Thermal Power Station in the region.
The Pakur–Gumani stretch forms a crucial part of the Khana–Rampurhat–Gumani–Barharwa section, which accommodates both passenger and freight traffic. With the recent sanctioning of additional lines in adjoining sections, the corridor has emerged as a vital freight artery in the region. The line capacity utilization of the Pakur–Gumani double line is presently oversaturated. Hence, this necessitates the requirement of construction of a 4th line.
The project will significantly enhance freight movement, particularly for coal traffic. With the development of the Godda-Pakur/Nagar Nabi coalfields, rail traffic of nearly 41 MTPA is expected to be generated by 2030. Around 14 rakes of coal are projected to move daily towards major thermal power plants including Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant and Ghatampur Thermal Power Station, with empty rakes returning on this route. The average interchange of goods trains at Gumani station already exceeds 29 trains per day in each direction, in addition to about 35 passenger trains.
The proposed 4th line will also facilitate the enhanced movement of containers, petroleum products, stone, and dolomite, creating additional capacity for both freight and passenger services. The project is expected to decongest the corridor, reduce delays, and strengthen operational efficiency, thereby improving service reliability.
With the sanction of the 4th Rail line, the Ministry of Railways reaffirms its commitment to enhancing Rail infrastructure, decongesting routes and strengthening freight and passenger movement for economic growth.
